About This Spot

Stepping into Banh Cuon Phuong Nga is like walking into a quiet corner of Vietnam tucked away in the heart of San Diego—a humble spot where the focus is unmistakably on the food and the simple joy it brings. The space moves at an unhurried pace, inviting you to pause and savor each bite without distraction. It doesn’t aim for flash or flair; instead, it welcomes you with an honest, unpretentious atmosphere, perfect for those who appreciate a meal crafted with care and tradition.

Here, the experience revolves around Bánh Cuốn, the delicate steamed rice rolls that arrive fresh and warm, filled with subtly seasoned meats and accompanied by housemade touches like fried pork paste and tangy fish sauce. The menu is delightfully pared down, a quiet declaration that this is a place that masters its few offerings rather than overstretching. This focus creates a comforting rhythm—each dish holds a different note of texture and flavor, from the softness of the rolls to the crispy edges of the fried pork loaf, making every bite feel considered.

What stands out is the freshness and authenticity that lingers in every mouthful, the kind of subtle satisfaction that’s rooted in time-honored recipes and fresh ingredients. Alongside, the Vietnamese iced coffee serves as a gentle counterpoint—bold, cool, and grounding. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick, unpretentious meal or picking up a party tray to share moments among friends and family, Banh Cuon Phuong Nga feels like a quietly treasured neighborhood secret that locals return to time and again.

One of the best banh cuon in San Diego! The menu options are straight forward just banh cuon, the topping options and 2-3 different kinds of soup limited time only, until they run out or if they even make it for that day. The place is not fancy, so just eat and go or take to go. They have party trays too, just call in advance.

Authentic Vietnamese place serving only 4 dishes. But if you like made to order banh cuon (steamed rice rolls), cha lua (steamed pork loaf), or best of all, gio chien (fried pork paste), you really won’t be disappointed. These simple items are much better than what’s available elsewhere because of the ingredients and because of their freshness. Yum! Note: You can reheat the fried pork paste in an air fryer at home and it still tastes good, but when it just comes out, the smell of it is so irresistible!

We ordered a party tray of half and half. Half bánh cuốn which is stuffed with meat and the plain, bánh ướt. The tray came with two rows of sliced meat loaf on top and one row of fried meat loaf. Also came with an entire take out box of filled with veggies and a soup container of fish sauce. The fried meat loaf was so good. I wish it came with more. The steamed rolls had lots of meat and the plain was nice and thin not so thick. All the flavors meshed together when you add the veggies and sauce. The tray cost $35 and fed four of us. We also got the meat loaf roll on the side for extra meat and that cost a whopping $7 which is a lot compared to other places. I would recommend ordering the tray if you have more than two people. You get the best bang for your buck. Parking here is super tight. I always fear that I’ll get a hit and run and would park really far just to get some space.

Been coming here for my banh cuon fix for years. Never disappointed. It's incredibly refreshing, tasty, and perfect for a summer day. I get the special number 1.

09-12-24 I ordered $50 party tray included: steamed pork rolls atop with: steamed pork loaf, fried pork loaf and fried fish cake; veggies and fish sauce 08-13-24 -6lbs of steamed pork roll $7/lb -Veggie $1 -Steamed pork loaf $10 -Fried pork loaf $10 When I walked into the restaurant, my order was ready for pick up. I paid and left to my destination, quick and easy. The food was yummy. Everything was piping hot. My family enjoyed it very much. Going forward, this will be my go to place to order all my banh cuon for parties.

My favorite banh cuon place. Love the meat that come with it. Always go for the Dac biet banh cuon. The bun rieu is ok, but I’ve had better else where in San Diego. I also would recommend the fried pork roll to take home. They sell those in the front. Taste great in bread when sliced, like a Vietnamese banh mi.
